Let’s be honest — for a lot of business owners, the idea of delegating feels… a bit terrifying.
“What if they don’t do it properly?”
“It’s quicker if I just do it myself.”
“I can’t risk something important being messed up.”
Sound familiar?
Here’s the brutal truth:
👉 If you don’t learn to delegate properly, you’ll become the bottleneck on your own business.
👉 If you stay stuck doing everything, you’ll limit your business’s growth to the number of hours you can personally work.
👉 If you don’t develop the skills and toolkit for effective delegation, you stunt your growth to become the best leader you can be.
Delegating properly isn’t about ‘giving up control’. It’s about creating better control.
The best leaders don’t do everything themselves.
They build systems, empower people, and create clarity — so that things still get done properly, just not always by them.
So, how do you delegate effectively without it all falling apart?
1. Delegate outcomes, not tasks
Instead of saying:
“Post three things on LinkedIn this week,”
say:
“Your goal is to drive brand visibility — here’s the kind of engagement we’re aiming for. Let’s discuss the approach.”
Focus on the end result you want — and let your team own the journey.
2. Be clear (really clear)
Half-hearted delegation sounds like:
“Can you sort that thing out for me?”
Proper delegation sounds like:
“I need X by Y date. Here’s what success looks like. Let’s check in at this point.”
Clarity creates confidence.
(And avoids 47 back-and-forth emails asking for clarification.)
3. Support — but don’t smother
Delegation doesn’t mean disappearing. That’s called abdication.
It means setting clear expectations, checking in at agreed milestones, and being available without micromanaging.
👉 Trust, but verify.
👉 Guide, but don’t grab the steering wheel.
4. Let people fail safely
Hard truth: nothing will be perfect the first time.
Good delegation includes creating room for mistakes — and using them as learning opportunities, not reasons to snatch back control.
(Think how you learned your biggest lessons — chances are, it wasn’t when everything went smoothly.)
Quick Story:
One of my clients was terrified of handing over client onboarding to his team.
He finally set up a proper process, trained his team properly, and trusted them to run it.
The first month? A couple of hiccups.
The second month? Smooth as anything.
Now?
He hasn’t touched onboarding for six months — and he’s got his evenings back.
(And funnily enough, the clients prefer dealing with his team — because they’re actually more responsive.)
So, here’s the challenge:
✅ What’s one thing you’re clinging onto right now that someone else could handle?
✅ What would it free up for you if you let it go properly?
✅ How would that change the way you lead your business?
If you’re ready to step up as the real leader your business needs, and stop being the person who “just sorts it out”, I’m offering a complimentary 45-minute strategy session to help you:
