Most business owners have a vision.
But be honest — is yours something your team could actually repeat back to you?
Or is it sitting in a slide deck somewhere, vague and forgotten?
Because here’s the truth:
If your team doesn’t feel connected to where the business is heading, they’ll just clock in, do what’s expected, and clock out.
They won’t challenge things. They won’t innovate. They won’t push.
Why would they? They’re just getting through the day.
What does a truly inspiring vision look like?
It’s not just a financial target. They don’t care about maximising shareholder returns.
It’s not just “to be the best at what we do.”
It’s something people can believe in.
Something they can see themselves being part of.
Something that gives their work meaning beyond the daily to-do list.
They can see a ‘line of sight’ between what you’re asking them to do and the bottom line goals and the longer term vision.
There is an alignment between their personal drivers, career goals and the business’ imperatives.
You want people saying:
👉 “That’s exciting — I want to be part of making that happen.”
👉 “This is bigger than just my job description.”
👉 “I can see where I fit in that picture.”
A quick example:
A client of mine in the construction industry wanted to improve staff retention.
We had a conversation that went like this:
Me: “What’s the bigger reason behind this business — beyond just the projects and profits?”
Him: “Honestly? I want to change how people see construction — bring more pride back to the trade.”
Me: “Great. Does your team know that?”
Him: “I don’t think so.”
So we reframed the vision. We shared it, backed it up with action, and built it into the culture.
The result?
People got it.
They rallied around it.
They started to care again.
Because the work became part of something more.
Here’s the challenge:
Your team don’t need you to be perfect.
But they do need you to be clear.
📢 What are we building?
📢 Why does it matter?
📢 What part does each person play?
If you can answer those three questions — and communicate them often, not just once at an all-hands meeting — you’ll start to see the shift.
Because when people connect to the bigger picture, they give more of themselves.
And that’s when the magic happens.
