I’m sure, like me, that you’ve been enjoying the Olympic Games these last few days – there have already been so many inspiring moments and I’m certain that there are many more to come!
Watching with family, we were discussing the sheer enormity when these athletes take to the world stage, with billions of people watching, it’s the culmination of a minimum of four years work, that all started with one goal – to win an Olympic medal.
Every 90 day, at our GrowthClub Planning Day, we spend an entire afternoon setting goals for the forthcoming quarter, and then breaking these goals down into individual bite-sized actions that are designed to help us achieve them – as a goal without a plan is just a wish – and we all know a ‘dreamer’ who talks a great game but never actually gets anywhere with it, right?!
There is so much POWER in goal setting if you harvest it in the right manner – I’ve seen clients achieve incredible success in setting targets and then working out how best to go about hitting them.
Lola Anderson told a truly inspiring story having won a gold medal in rowing this week, in that as a 13 year old she wrote in her diary that her ‘biggest dream in life is to go to the Olympics and win a rowing gold for GB’.
She threw the note away, but her late father, a rower himself, kept it and presented it to her five years ago before he sadly passed away with terminal cancer, He wanted to remind her of her dreams.
This is a great example of manifestation – or of setting your RAS (Reticular Activating System) – a brilliant place to start.
“What the hell is a Reticular Activating System?” you ask.
It’s a network of Neurons, a filter system that allows certain information in your brain and filters out other information as the brain cannot process the vast amount of information trying to get in. Setting goals is a way activating your RAS to focus and direct your immensely powerful subconscious brain, ‘Look out for and go after this – it’s really important to me’.
Your RAS is the reason that when you learn a new word, you start hearing it everywhere – it takes what you focus on and creates a filter for it, sifts through the data and presents only the pieces that are important to you – all without you noticing.
It sets your intent.
I encourage my clients to create vision boards and to write down, visualise and verbalise their goals for this very reason – your conscious brain can start working on it while you sleep!
I had a client who had three months to hit a £60k revenue target – he wrote £60k in massive writing on a sheet of A4 and stuck it up in front of him. Within a few days he was effortlessly finding ways to get closer to the target and did it with weeks to spare.
Another client of mine told his brother about this process. At the time, his brother was single and renting a flat. He started working on visualising himself as a homeowner living with a long-term partner – he did this every morning for months.
Within a year, he’d purchased his own place and a month after that, he met the girl of his dreams and two years later they’re engaged to be married!
Another client of mine wants to exit his business at 50 – so that’s the RAS set – he’s now putting a plan together to break down these next four years into quarterly goals across both his business and his own personal development. He reckons he’ll get there in half that time as a result.
This stuff genuinely works – but you can’t rely on RAS alone.
You need a plan and you need to spend time daily working on that plan.
And when you do, you’ll be amazed at how quickly you start hitting those goals – and the best part is that once those goals are achieved, you can start on the next one!
I’ll bet my life on the fact that you’ve got goals that you’d like to achieve in the short, mid and long-term.
Don’t put them off – write them down and start making a plan today and if you need some help with that plan, you know where I am!
