Matthew Morrall, CEO & Founder – ABEC

From £10M to £40M+ and Beyond – How Coaching Helped Unlock a £100M Vision

Background
In 2004, Matt Morrall launched ABEC with a clear mission: to help clients run buildings more efficiently, more sustainably, and with smarter technology. Over the next 15 years, the business grew steadily into a respected £10M company.

But Matt knew ABEC could achieve more. He remained heavily involved in the day-to-day, juggling multiple roles, and felt the business had far greater potential. That all changed when he met ActionCOACH’s Sanjiv Dodhia.

What began as a conversation about strategy soon developed into a transformative partnership. Today, ABEC has more than quadrupled in size, secured major private equity investment, and set its sights firmly on becoming a £100M business.

The Challenge
“Things were going well, but we were by no means the finished article,” recalls Matt. “I’d looked at other leadership development options, but nothing clicked. I didn’t want a classroom course – I needed someone to challenge me, hold me accountable, and help build a clear roadmap.”

The Coaching Journey
From the outset, Sanjiv’s real-world business experience and hands-on approach made the difference.

Together, they mapped out a five-year plan to grow ABEC to £50M – with measurable goals, clear responsibilities, and a stronger leadership structure. This alignment gave the entire team clarity and focus.

Matt himself experienced a personal transformation. “I’d never been a fan of rigid schedules, but Sanjiv convinced me to structure my time more consistently. It wasn’t just for me – it was for the benefit of my team. That change rippled across the whole company.”

ABEC began implementing 90-day plans, weekly accountability sessions, and structured team meetings. “It gave us momentum,” says Matt. “We stopped firefighting and started building the business properly.”

The Results

  • Revenue growth: Within 12 months, turnover increased by £8M.

  • Recognition: ABEC was named Best Overall Company at the BizX Awards in 2022.

  • Leadership: A senior leadership team was established, enabling Matt to step back from day-to-day operations and focus on future growth.

  • Investment: In 2025, ABEC secured private equity investment from Magnesium Capital, cementing its position as a leader in the building controls industry.

“For the first time, I was able to step back and focus on our future,” says Matt. “Sanjiv changed the game for us – no question. He made me a better leader and helped the whole business grow up. Without his guidance, we wouldn’t be in the position we are today.”

Looking Ahead
With private equity backing, an experienced board in place, and operations now spanning 10 countries, ABEC is aiming for £100M in revenue and continued international expansion.

Matt reflects: “We feel like we’re just getting started. The opportunities ahead are massive – and we’re in the perfect position to take full advantage.”

Coach’s Perspective
“Matt already had a great foundation,” says Sanjiv, “but what set him apart was his willingness to be coached. He was open, committed, and brought his team along with him. Playing a role in ABEC’s growth has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my career.”
